Preventive Care

Wellness & preventive care.

Preventive care

Preventative care is so much more than just vaccinations and flea prevention.

The whole picture

What preventive care actually covers.

At Bonnie Mara Animal Hospital, we know preventative care is so much more than just vaccinations and flea prevention. We follow the American Animal Hospital Association’s recommendations on vaccinations, and we’ll work with you to discuss core versus recommended vaccinations tailored to your pet.

We’ll also talk about:

  • Puppy and kitten socialization
  • Diet and supplement options
  • Behavior and training recommendations
  • Weight management
  • Breed or species specific concerns to monitor for
  • Behavioral enrichment

Wellness visits

Wellness visits are the cornerstone of your pet’s preventive healthcare plan. They allow us to establish a health baseline and monitor your pet for changes over time. They also allow for early disease detection, which leads to more effective treatment and better outcomes.

During a wellness visit, our veterinarians conduct a thorough physical and behavioral assessment. You are encouraged to ask questions and raise any concerns you might have, and we’ll discuss recommended products or services to keep your pet in optimal condition.

02

Physical exams

Our veterinarians perform a comprehensive physical exam each time your pet visits. Wellness exams focus on detecting common health issues that may go unnoticed at home, such as dental disease, a heart murmur, or arthritis. We check your pet from nose to tail, including their eyes, ears, mouth, skin, and coat, as well as their cardiovascular, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems. An awake oral exam is part of every physical exam. Our approach is thorough and compassionate, ensuring your pet feels comfortable and cared for.

Vaccinations

We follow the American Animal Hospital Association’s vaccination recommendations, and we’ll work with you to discuss core versus recommended vaccinations tailored to your pet—not a one-size-fits-all schedule.

Canine vaccines

Our hospital offers the following vaccines for dogs:

  • Rabies
  • Distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus (DAPP)
  • Leptospirosis
  • Bordetella
  • Lyme disease
  • Canine influenza

Feline vaccines

We follow the Feline Veterinary Medical Association and American Animal Hospital Association recommendations for our feline patients, and we’ll help tailor your cat’s vaccinations to their lifestyle.

  • Rabies
  • Feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia (FVRCP)
  • Feline leukemia virus (FeLV)

We thoughtfully selected PureVax and Elanco Trufel premium vaccinations. These were specifically designed for cats, are non-adjuvants, small volume vaccinations which are less likely to create inflammation at the site of the vaccination.

Vaccine titers

Vaccine titers are blood tests that measure your pet’s antibody levels to determine if booster vaccinations are necessary. Checking a titer can be helpful for pets with a history of adverse vaccine reactions or for pet parents who prefer them. Titers are available only for select vaccinations and don’t take the place of vaccination, but instead allow you to make more informed decisions about your pet’s care.

04

Parasite prevention

Parasite prevention protocols protect your pet from the serious health issues caused by fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal worms. Effective prevention also reduces the risk of parasite transmission to other household pets and vulnerable family members, especially children. Our veterinarians assess each pet’s lifestyle to develop a year-round prevention plan.

We offer the following parasite prevention services:

  • Fecal parasite testing and treatment
  • Heartworm testing and treatment
  • Skin and ear mite testing and treatment
  • Deworming medications
  • Heartworm preventive products
  • Flea and tick preventive products

Wellness diagnostics

Routine wellness diagnostics and screening tests help catch health issues early, often before symptoms appear at home. Early detection allows more effective treatment and can add years to your pet’s life.

Depending on your pet’s history, age and breed, we may discuss:

  • Blood work
  • Urinalysis
  • Parasite screening
  • Canine tick-borne disease screening
  • Feline viral disease screening
  • Blood pressure screening
  • X-rays
  • Ultrasound
  • Blood cancer screening

Puppies & kittens

We love meeting your new puppies and kittens! At Bonnie Mara we want to set them up for success. By utilizing fear free techniques, our intent is to develop a trusting relationship with them that will benefit them for a lifetime of visits to the vet.

We’ll focus on setting you up for success with socialization education, as well as navigating the current research on the appropriate time to spay or neuter your pet. And of course, we’ll discuss vaccine schedules, deworming, parasite prevention and diet options.

Although most puppies and kittens coming to the vet are healthy, their visits are not just “for their shots.” We believe these are some of the most important visits we will have together, and want to set you up for a lifetime of success both medically and behaviorally.

Senior pets

Bonnie Mara Animal Hospital loves our senior patients! Making sure our senior cats and dogs age without experiencing arthritic pain, or struggling with chronic diseases or cognitive decline, can impact both their quality of life and yours.

Although routine lab screening to help monitor for diseases is recommended for our senior and geriatric patients, this doesn’t mean we have to run a lot of tests to really improve their quality of life. Sometimes subtle lifestyle changes or supplements can help with the little day-to-day struggles that our more wizened pets may experience.
